9 May 2013 - Our Next Rosh Chodesh Gathering

A Jewish Cooking/Cookbook "Retreat" Our next Rosh Chodesh will be a sharing of Jewish cooking. What does that mean? Is there even a way to define Jewish cooking? According to Judaism 101 (and specifically see http://www.jewfaq.org/food.htm), "Jewish cooking is a unique synthesis of cooking styles from the many places that Jews have lived throughout the centuries. Jewish cooking shows the influence of Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Spanish, German and Eastern European styles of cooking, all influenced by the unique dietary constraints of kashrut and other Jewish laws. Many of the foods that we think of as Jewish are not unique to Jewish culture. Stuffed cabbage, a traditional Jewish dish, is common in Eastern Europe. Blintzes and knishes are familiar to all Germans, not just Jewish ones. Falafel and hummus, increasingly thought of as Israeli-Jewish foods, can be found in any Greek restaurant. But the combination of these varied foods into one style of cooking, along with our own innovations, is uniquely Jewish." So during our next Rosh Chodesh gathering on May 9 from 7 - 9, we will have our own "retreat" on Jewish cooking. Come and schmooze and nosh, listen in, bring a favorite Jewish cookbook and perhaps even a snack from that cookbook, share a favorite Jewish cooking website or blog, and give us your opinions on what constitutes Jewish cooking.

With Spring in bloom, join us to get inspired to get outside, walk, run or otherwise be active. Our speaker will get our minds thinking to get our bodies moving. As always, we will have time to socialize and catch up with our old friends and to meet new friends, as well as listen to an interesting speaker. Please join us! (Apologies for not posting for our March gathering - our musical instrument adventure! Ask a Rosh Chodesh member to explain our magical evening.)

19 February 2013 @ 7 pm - Rosh Chodesh Gathering

On 19 February, Kim McCarl will talk to the Rosh Chodesh ladies about the Myers-Briggs tool to determine personalities and their natural preferences. This tool can help maximize relationships at work and home, communication techniques, job options, self development, team building, understanding the human condition and so much more. If you've ever wondered about how you could be more receptive to the personality needs of the people you spend the most time with, please join us!

10 January 2013 @ 7 pm - Rosh Chodesh Gathering

Our January gathering was truly a Jewish woman's event. We had a midshipman from the Naval Academy share with us her journey of getting into the Naval Academy and her experiences both as a woman and a Jewish person. She was a delight and inspiration and a young person who shared her belief in faith. As one of our Rosh Chodesh members said, "I want to be her when I grow up."

02 December 2012

13 December 2012 @ 7 pm - Rosh Chodesh Gathering

The Rosh Chodesh ladies will meet at an Annapolis restaurant for a dinner out. A great opportunity to get to know each other better.

Kislev 5773

Kislev 5773 began 15 November 2012. Kislev is the 9th month of the Jewish calendar. Chanukah begins on the 24th day of Kislev. One famous woman’s Yahrzeit during Kislev is Emma Lazarus, one of the first successful Jewish American authors. Her poem “The New Colossus” is inscribed on the plaque of the Statue of Liberty. Another famous woman's Yahrzeit during Kislev is Golda Meir, Israel’s first female Prime Minister and at the time, the world’s third woman Prime Minister.

14 November @ 6:30 pm - Rosh Chodesh Gathering

How often do you check your email per hour? Do you pay attention during the Rabbi's sermon? Do you find long stories too long? In other words, is your attention span at attention? Join Dr. Jackie Ginsburg who explains the difference between a wandering mind and ADD/ADHD. What does ADD/ADHD actually mean? Do you have it, your kids or grandchildren, or your spouse? Does it matter? What's the hype? Why are so many kids on medication for it? How come our generation got by without medication and many "ADD/ADHD" people emerged with successful careers? Our next Rosh Chodesh will explore these issues. Note that this gathering was previously scheduled for 15 November 2012.
